The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) is an innovative organization that focuses on bridging the gap between academic discoveries in the health sciences and the development of new medicines to treat human diseases. With operational facilities located on the campuses of the University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University (SFU), and the BC Cancer Agency (BCCA), CDRD has established a novel drug development platform. By working closely with Canadian academic researchers and the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry, CDRD provides a collaborative framework through which drug development can become sustainable, cost-effective and advantageous to society.

Job Summary

Reporting to the VP Biologics, the Senior Technician, Molecular Biology, is responsible for day-to-day operation of CDRD’s Cloning and Expression activities.

Responsibilities

• Manages the day-to-day activities regarding Cloning and Expression efforts.

• Carries out and oversees cloning and expression of antigens and antibodies, performs transient expression and stable cell line development, assists with protein purification.

• Carries out and oversees bioinformatics in the areas of genomic and proteomics, including analysis of antibody V-genes.

• Responsible for determining and executing molecular approaches for epitope determination.

• Performs validation of targets for antibody therapy using molecular strategies.

• Assists with equipment installation, set-up and organization of laboratory equipment and software.

• Oversees the work of others and trains staff in molecular biology techniques and use of equipment and software programs.

• Prepares reports and technical presentations.

• Prepares, reviews and updates laboratory procedures as required.

• Coordinates required periodic maintenance of molecular biology laboratory instruments and equipment.

• Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• BSc or equivalent in a Life Sciences discipline and a minimum 5 years experience in molecular biology; or MSc in a Life Sciences discipline and 2 years of related experience.

• Significant experience in cloning and expression techniques.

• Proficiency with molecular biology and bioinformatics software.

• Experience with tissue culture and sterile techniques.

• Protein purification experience preferred.

• Knowledge in molecular modeling an asset

• Good organizational skills.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

• Ability to work and communicate effectively as part of a team.
