The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) is an innovative organization that focuses on bridging the gap between academic discoveries in the health sciences and the development of new medicines to treat human diseases. With operational facilities located on the campuses of the University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University (SFU), and the BC Cancer Agency (BCCA), CDRD has established a novel drug development platform. By working closely with Canadian academic researchers and the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry, CDRD provides a collaborative framework through which drug development can become sustainable, cost-effective and advantageous to society.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Head of Screening, the Senior Technician, Assay Development is responsible for assisting to manage the day-to-day operation of CDRD’s Screening Lab.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the managing of the day-to-day activities of the Screening Lab.

• Assists with overall organization of screening equipment including liquid handling robotics, assay platforms and library capabilities.

• Performs assay development, medium throughput screens and library distribution utilizing robotic equipment.

• Oversees the work of others and trains staff in equipment use, assay development and execution.

• Conducts analysis of screening data including designing software parameters for hit selection.

• Independently carry out small projects to completion.

• Prepares reports and technical presentations.

• Prepares, reviews and updates laboratory procedures as required.

• Coordinates required periodic maintenance, calibration, and qualification of all laboratory instruments and equipment.

• Assist in operation of a High Content Screening setup when necessary.

• Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• BSc in a Life Sciences discipline and a minimum 5 years experience with assay development; or MSc in a Life Sciences discipline and 2 years of related experience.

• Hands on experience with biochemical and cell-based assays.

• Experience in DNA cloning and protein expression an asset

• Liquid handling/automation experience preferred, but not required

• Cell culture experience an asset

• A good knowledge of statistical analysis.

• Good organizational skills.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

• Ability to work and communicate effectively as part of a team.
