VANCOUVER, Canada – February 8 , 2013: The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) is pleased to announce it was successful in garnering a renewed investment of $8 million as a Centres of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR), one of Canada’s most successful research commercialization programs, managed by the federal Networks of Centres of Excellence.
Originally supported by the Program in 2008, CDRD was one of four successful centres across the country to receive additional funding to help support key strategic initiatives over the next five years.
Dr. David Dolphin, Chair of CDRD’s Board of Directors commented, “We are very appreciative of the support we have received from the federal government, and for their recognition of the positive impact we have had on Canada’s life sciences and health research ecosystem. Due to the large amount of funding required to successfully translate academic discovery into viable commercial opportunity, the federal government has been and continues to be a critical partner for us.”
Since CDRD received its initial CECR funding, it has successfully met each of its stated first five-year objectives and become a leading international translational research and commercialization centre with affiliations across Canada and around the world; while leveraging the initial CECR investment of $15M into over $115M from public and private sector partners.
CDRD President and CEO, Karimah Es Sabar added, “We are very proud of what we have accomplished to date, and look forward to continuing our mission of transforming the culture of scientific innovation and commercialization impacting human health. We also want to acknowledge our many partners across government, industry and academia. It is their support and active engagement that has enabled our success to date.”
