T. Michael Underhill

Dr. T. Michael Underhill is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences at The University of British Columbia (UBC). Prior to joining UBC, Michael was on Faculty in the School of Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario (1996-2004).

Michael is a member of two Canadian Networks Centres of Excellence: Canadian Arthritis Network, and Stem Cell Network from which he receives research grant funding. At present, he also receives research grant funding from The Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) independently as well as in conjunction with the CIHR Group in Skeletal Development and Remodeling. Michael currently holds an Investigator salary award from The Arthritis Society. During his Ph.D. studies, Michael cloned the gene responsible for the active transport of methotrexate across the plasma membrane. Subsequently, he went on to carry out post-doctoral studies at Duke University in the laboratory of Dr. El Linney. During this period, Dr. Underhill studied the role of retinoic acid signaling in limb development. These initial studies have led to his current interests in defining the molecular mechanisms regulating skeletal development.
