Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Julio Montaner received his MD with Honors from the University of Buenos Aires in 1979. In 1981, he joined UBC at St Paul’s Hospital. In 1988, he became the Director of the AIDS Research Program and the Immunodeficiency Clinic. In the mid 90’s, he played a key role in establishing the efficacy of HAART. Since then he has established the role of HAART as prevention. He has received numerous awards and recognition, including most recently, the inaugural $5M Avant Garde Award from NIDA-NIH, the inaugural Aubrey Tingle Award from MSFHR and the CIHR Knowledge Translation Award. He is a Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada, a member of the Order of BC and recipient of an honorary doctorate from SFU. He has authored over 400 publications on HIV/AIDS.
