Moving Discoveries Along the Drug Development Process

Our research and development facilities, equipment, expertise, and training opportunities are second to none in Canada. The Centre for Drug Research and Development Investigators can take advantage of resources at facilities located at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the BC Cancer Agency. These sites allow scientists to access vital drug-development equipment to collaborate and advance drug development throughout the province. CDRD provides investigators with support and guidance through five divisions that mirror the drug-development process:

·                     Target Validation

·                     Drug Screening

·                     Medicinal Chemistry

·                     Pharmacology/Toxicology

·                     Drug Delivery

CDRD Expands into Biologics

In addition to CDRD’s existing resources, last year CDRD announced $900,000 in Government of Canada support through Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) to establish a leading-edge Biologics Division at its research facilities located on the University of British Columbia campus. The integration of biologics into CDRD's existing drug development platform is expected to increase avenues for commercialization of Canadian research in a growing area of new therapeutics and provide additional resources accessible to the local research community and biotechnology sector. The new Biologics Division will focus on the discovery and optimization of monoclonal antibodies - the most successful and fastest growing class of biologics, against a significant number of molecular targets in a wide range of diseases. This funding has allowed purchase and commission of several pieces of scientific equipment and software, as well as the hiring of highly skilled personnel.

Metabolomics Becomes CDRD’s Newest Research Platform

CDRD and the Pan Alberta Metabolomics Platform (PANAMP) have also entered into a preferred collaboration agreement to work together on projects of mutual interest, and allowing CDRD to leverage their expertise and infrastructure which includes more than $5 million in state-of-the-art metabolomics infrastructure located at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.
