CDRD’s Training Program is a key component of the organization’s mission: Uniquely train the next generation of highly-qualified personnel to drive the development of innovation. CDRD offers a fusion of academia’s collaborative spirit with industry’s focus, thereby providing a truly unique platform for young researchers to transition from the academic to the industrial world.
By nature, CDRD provides a rich and diverse learning environment. Trainees participate on cross-functional project teams where they work with scientists from a wide range of disciplines who are experienced in both academia and industry. Outside the lab, CDRD’s drug development workshop series, business skills training, and seminars provide an opportunity to further supplement Trainees’ knowledge base. Training partnerships are also established with complementary organizations where appropriate to facilitate networking opportunities, and provide top-notch workshops delivered by industry experts.
CDRD Trainees come from a broad range of disciplines including biology, genetics, molecular biology, medical genetics, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, and chemistry (analytical, organic, polymer). Successful applicants have a relevant technical background and are self-motivated, creative, flexible team players.
CDRD Post-Doctoral placements are typically two years in duration and recruitment is ongoing. Recent completion of a PhD in a related scientific discipline is required. A $2,500 stipend is available over the two-year term to attend conferences and workshops relevant to the Post-Doc’s current research. Post-Docs are also matched with a CDRD mentor based on individual career goals and learning and development objectives.
CDRD currently recruits students through co-op programs at the following institutions: The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology, University of Victoria, University of the Fraser Valley, and McMaster University. Placements typically run 4-8 months beginning in January, May, and September. Students work full-time and all positions are paid. Applications are submitted directly to the participating co-op programs.
Interns acquire skills toward an entry-level role on the business side of R&D commercialization while contributing to the goals and objectives of CDRD. Typical applicants have completed a graduate or business degree, and internships are 6-12 month placements.
To date 192 trainees have completed the CDRD training program and overall 96% of alumni are gainfully employed in their chosen field. CDRD alumni successfully gone on to obtain employment with an array of 50 life sciences companies and research institutions including STEMCELL Technologies Inc., Xenon Pharmaceuticals, the BC Cancer Agency, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and MaRS Innovation. Our program is continuously evaluated by both trainees and prospective employers to ensure the program’s effectiveness in preparing researchers for careers in the biopharmaceutical industry and beyond.
