This Division conducts robust in vitro and in vivo assays to determine the safety and efficacy of novel therapies in a single-point-of-contact structure. These assays characterize how a drug candidate is distributed within the body, how it is removed from the body, how effective it is against a disease or medical condition, and determines its safety profile. Drug-like qualities can be evaluated in vitro using a broad range of assays that measure efficacy, drug-drug interactions, safety, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADME/T).


The Pharmacology & Toxicology Division performs detailed in vivo analysis of metabolism and pharmacokinetics. It has a broad spectrum of pre-clinical models of human disease to evaluate the effectiveness of candidate therapies. Through internal expertise and collaborations with leading experts, CDRD can evaluate promising compounds and demonstrate in vivo efficacy as well as a broad range of safety characteristics. The Division is well equipped to handle pharmacology and toxicology studies, including, bioanalytical instrumentation, in vivo telemetry and behavioral monitoring equipment, multi-detection plate readers, and non-invasive optical imagers. Collectively, Division tools and expertise facilitate the evaluation, selection and advancement of safe, effective compounds towards clinical trials.
